Alexander, Jim and Sheryl: I'm principal of Bethel Lutheran School in Morton, Illinois. Sheryl is an ass't vice president at Morton Community Bank in the stock brokerage end of the business. We have been married for 28 yrs. and have 4 children. William (adopted) is 33 and a banker in Olney, IL; Sheila is 30 and a homemaker in Olney, IL; Jesse is a machinist in East Peoria, IL and Steven is a PFC in the Army, stationed at Ft. Campbell, KY. We have six grandchildren ranging in age from 10 to 2, with a seventh on the way. By the way, one of my staff members is Sharon (Winkleman) Rumbold, also of the 1965 era.

I currently live in Springfield, OR and teach fifth grade in the public school system. I have two daughters, Alycia who will be attending Oregon State University in the fall, and Beth who is graduating from Oregon State June 16 and is getting married August 17th. We are happy here in Oregon, love the weather and the variety of things to do.

Sheila and I wish all of you a fine and safe Holiday Season.

I have completed the genealogy of my father, B. Arnold Block, and in the process identified the home and family from which he emigrated. We found the present Block family in Ostfriesland Germany and visited them this last April. The story of our visit is told in a full page report in the Kurier newspaper there. In our annual Christmas letter we couldn't include it, so we put the it up on the internet for our friends to see.

Born, Rick and Ellen (Voss, El. Ed '79): Living in the Phoenix, AZ area. Rick works for Honeywell as an El. Engineer as he has for 17 years. I volunteer at the children's school, as well as lead a Scout troop. At our church I help lead Sunday school, the quilting group, and teach a music apprieciation class for 3 & 4 year olds. Mary Kay is still a part-time buisiness for me.

Brockman, Douglas (Academy '70) and Mary: I graduated Academy in 1970 then attended Missouri State and Missouri on a National Merit Scholarship. I graduated from Ku Med School in 1977, then finished Internal Medicine Residency in 1980 at Oklahome University. I returned to the Springfield Mo area where I continue to work at Cox Hospital as an Internist. Two of my four children are now married and my wife teaches Biology at Ozark Technical Institute. We attend Trinity Lutheran Church. I have continued outdoors activities including backpacking, triathletics, and canoeing.

Wanda and I live in the Denver metro area. I took early retirement from public school & college teaching in 1992 and am enjoying life serving His church as organist, choir director, hand bell director and music clinician. We have a thriving liturgical music program at Trinity Lutheran, Denver.

My helpers and I repair antique clocks as a hobby for over 1200 customers in 27 states I am a "gentleman" Texas farmer/rancher. Not bad for an old Demon!

Burgess, Carl (SJA/SJC '52 - '56): Went through two years of HS & College at Winfield '52 - 56. Married Virginia Mussler in'57. Managed various credit offices for CBI in Oregon & eventually became Quality Control Director for all Credit Bureaus in So. WA, Oregon & N. CA. With three children, returned to school at Concordia, Portland, University of Portland and Concordia, Seward and then taught parochial school in WI. Moved on to teach what was then called the Mentally Retarded, Emotionally Disturbed and Physically handicapped in a Sheltered Workshop setting. Virginia and I divorced in '75. Moved to CO and went into pest control business and was eventually hired by Orkin to open new offices for them in the Pacific NW. Was hired by Paramount Pest Control in '77 as a salesman and was promoted to General manager of Oregon Corp in six months. Moved to Spokane WA in '84 and opened and Adult Family Home for Alzheimer victims, caring for them and taking them through Hospice. My Adult Family Home (Pine Meadows) was converted to a home for adults who are Developmentally Disabled. Some have various mental illnesses and all are mentally retarded to some degree. I live right in the facility and am on duty up to 17 hours a day, caring for my clients needs and activities of daily life. I was Chrismated into the Orthodox Christian Church four years ago.

Hartwich, Dona J. (Lusterman, ): Dona J. Hartwich (Lusterman) 68-70 Transfered to Seward. Graduated in 72 then went to Australia to teach. Have been here ever since. Have taught grades 3-4 at the Lutheran School here, stopped to have children, taught at the kindergarten for awhile, did part time teaching at a Catholic High School, was a librarian for a mobile library with the education department and taught library lessons at 9 schools ranging in 1 teacher to 4 teacher schools. Was a librarian at a state school, plus a part-time class teacher, then was the pe and art coordinator at another school. Now I am an integration aide at our local Lutheran high school. Next year I hope to start working on a Graduate Diploma in Education (Computers in Education) and get a full time teaching position. I also am super of our Sunday School and am a religious instruction teacher at a state school (state meaning public.)

Hass, Ken and Esther (Lueker, TT '70): Ken and I teach at St. Peter in Richmond, Mi. We've stayed in the Lutheran system and been many places. We have three children Ken, Tom, & Sue. The youngest graduates this year from Lutheran High North, Macomb.
Mostly we spend our time working (ministry is what sjc is all about-right?) We try to keep up with the world and figure out what's goin' on... Then try to squeeze some fun out of life. I'd love to hear from some of you who were there, I have warm,loving memories of St. John's.

I'm living in Delray Beach, Florida (80+ degrees today with sun and a nice breeze 3/8/03!) with John-17, Katie-15, and our two large dogs, Oliver and Gee. The three of us 'attend' a small Christian Reformed high school where they are students and I am Library Media Director (PK-12). I enjoy family time, friends, my work with staff and students, fresh seafood, walking the beach, reading, studying, and leading women's Bible studies.

Last fall, we bought the farm...literally. Moved out in December to a temporary mobile home. We plan to build a log cabin in the next couple of years. Now we're getting used to country life. Deb's folks will join us this summer.

On Saturday June 17, 2000 at 5 pm, Dedra Nienhuser and Richard Hessee was joined in matrimony at their home in Walnut Shade, Missouri. Hullinger, Robert (M '53) and Charlotte (TT '53): Bob retired in 1998 but is serving as Pastoral Worship Assistant at Messiah in Greenhills and as editor of Ohio District News. I stepped down as National Executive Director of Parents of Murdered Children in 1986 and established a private counseling practice, which I still continue.

I am a librarian at Aims Community College in Greeley, CO. My wife Beth is completing her teaching degree at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. I still do pulpit supply and am an elder in my congregation. My son Christopher recently graduated from the St. Louis Seminary and will be an assistant pastor in Lexington, KY. He received the Alumni scholarship as he attended Valparaiso and the Seminary. My daughter Catherine is at Valparaiso in the Chemistry and Pre-Med program. She plans on becoming a deaconness and serving as a doctor in a mission field or to an underserved U.S. population.

Keseman, Bruce (M '85) and Christine (FS '86): Bruce continues to serve as pastor and Christine as music director at Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, Freeburg, Illinois. We've been enjoying the Lord's blessings here since 1991. As this is written in 2005, our children, Andrew, Hannah, and Rachel, are 15, 13, and 10 years old. Andrew is a writer, Hannah is an artist, and Rachel is our athlete. And, being children of Christine, they all play piano, plus Andrew is a trumpeter and guitarist; Hannah is a violinist; and both girls are flutists. Christine still plays organ, piano, flute, and a little harp. Bruce plays nothing but the radio. Christine is organist, bell choir director, choir accompanist, and music coordinator at church. She also does lots of substitute teaching at the Freeburg school. In addition to his work as pastor, Bruce is active in Higher Things, a Lutheran youth organization. He serves on the HT Board of Directors and is Chairman of the 2005 HT Youth Conference in St. Louis, "Dare to Be Lutheran." La Grange, Jeanette (Peterson, PW '62): I am still working at Iowa State University 9 months of the year. The grandchildren are definitely growing, 13 and 17! Wow, that is dating me, isn't it? I am a widow and adjusting to life alone once again. Many activities fill my life with joy and friends are precious. We are having a mini Johnnie reunion in Ames, IA May 24-27, 2010 with Lois (Engleman) Martin who was my Johnnie roommate for 2 years!!, Doris (Erler) Rittman, Susan (Knust) Stults, Margie (Nordbrock) Schuppan and Marian (Wiesehan) Rische. Every few years we try to get together and this year I have the privilege of hosting "our" group except Marty (Thompson) Sauer, who will be on a trip to Germany so is unable to join us. My church home, Memorial Lutheran Church and Student Center here in Ames is a wonderful continuation of that Christian fellowship that we experienced at St. John's.

Langston, Joanne (Academy '65, College '67): In August 2005, half of Slidell was blown or washed away. Many friends left homeless. Our house was dry but the roof was full of holes with 5 large pines piled on. We did better than so many, and we rode out the storm, they called her Katrina, at home. Then in October we flew to Berlin and spent Reformation Day 2005 in Lutherstadt-Wittenberg, a dream come true. We visited the graves of Luther, Melancthon, Kaethe Luther in Torgau, and J.S. Bach in Leipzig all on our way to see the newly restored Frauenkirche in Dresden. After several weeks resting and touring in the Peloponisos, we flew home to the war zone. Everyday, things get better. Many thanks to the good Lutherans of the Eastern Iowa District for coming to help put us back together again.

During my year at the sem, I realized the world didn't need another mediocre minister.

I took up the study of chemistry and received the PhD degree from the University of Texas in 1963, whereupon I enjoyed two glorious years as a post-doctotoral fellow at the ETH (Eidgen”ssische Technische Hochschule) in Zrich, Switzerland. Major accomplishments were: 1) meeting my wife, Catherine, 2) being part of the team synthesizing vitamin B12, and 3) learning to ski.

Catherine and I moved to Cambridge MA shortly after our wedding (1965), where I was a post-doc at MIT and had the chance to work in the cradle of computer graphics. In 1967 we moved to College Station TX where I took a position at Texas A&M University in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics. In addition to teaching and research, I had the opportunity to be the first to use color computer graphics (Brookhaven National Laboratory, 1968) for the display of molecular structures. In short order, I founded the Protein Data Bank (1971), the definitive depository of structural data of biomolecules and initiated computer networking in the life sciences (1971). I was a visiting collaborator at Brookhaven and the Max-Planck-Institute of Biochemistry, Munich.

Catherine and I have three children and three grandchildren. Erik was born in 1966. He and his siblings all attended public schools in College Station. After a year at Texas Lutheran (Seguine), Erik transferred to the University of Texas, Austin, where he received his B.S. degree in chemistry. He subsequently received the Ph.D. degree in chemistry from MIT, Cambridge. He is married (Sarah) and is living in Princeton, NJ. Where he works at a biotech company. Claudia was born in 1967. She and her siblings attended the Univeristy of Texas, Austin, receiving two B.S. degrees, one in Plan II (liberal arts, with honors) and one in architecture (with honors). Before graduation he spent a year with the architect, Santiago Calatrava, in Zurich and Paris. She then worked firms in Luzerne (CH), Albuquerque, and Houston, before receiving a M.S. degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). She has AIA and AILA certification and works for a landscape architecture firm in Santa Fe. She is the mother of a glorious daughter, Sofia. Our youngest son, Felix, also graduated from UT in Plan II (with honors) and spent a year as a Fulbright scholar in Belgium. He and his family (two grandsons) live in Zurich (CH), where he is a software engineer for an international industrial firm. Felix and Claudia studied the cello and violin; Felix still plays with a church orchestra in Zurich.

I taught and supervised graduate students, post-docs, and occasional visiting professors for 35 years, publishing just short of 100 research papers before retiring. In my last years at A&M, I took up the hobby of carving sculptures of molecules. The connection back to computer graphics is not that remote, as many times I had been struck by the inherent beauty of molecular structures that the world might never see. If God's beauty is revealed in nature, shouldn't she also be found at the molecular level? The answer is thrilling! Catherine and I retired and moved to Taos NM, where I set up a modelling and sculpting shop - you can find examples of my work on my web site: http://molecular-sculpture.com/ . We are active members of Sangre de Cristo Lutheran Church, Taos.

Recent accomplishments include being commissioned by the Boston Museum of Science to make a scaled model of the site of binding and action of aspirin in the enzyme cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) and, this spring, delivering bronze castings of models of the polio virus capsid and the capsid+membrane complex to the current exhibition `Whatever Happened to Polio" at the National Museum of American History, the Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, and to the Harvard Medical School. http://americanhistory.si.edu/polio/virusvaccine/how.htm

Ron and Ruth are off to retirement in their log home in Garden Valley, Idaho just one mile north of boise in a valley of the Sawtooth Mountain Range. December 17 is Ron's last day as the Director of International Education and instructor at Concordia University-Nebraska ending his 41 years in the Lutheran teaching ministry.

There is always room at the Richter's if anyone is near by. Just call or email and we will keep the light on.

Our ACADEMY class of 1959 has been working very hard to find all of our class members and we have located all but two, Betty Porter and Helen Alpers.

He had been on loan to the FBI working for the Joint Terrorism Task Force for the last two years. He retired with 32 years service, 29 as SWAT team leader. He is now fishing, canoeing, and playing. Cheryl is working at Hancock Fabricks. Three grown children have left home. Thaddeus (29 years)has been a police officer for the last four years and recently got married. Tobias (27 yrs)has returned from Chia yi,Taiwan where he was teaching at Concordia Middle School. He will be getting married this fall, and hopefully will be working in a Chinese mission project at Purdue Univ. Named a Fulbright Teacher Scholar in 1998 - and spent three weeks in Japan studying with my counterparts.

Family does well -- son Sean, 20, works as software installer and trainer for Best Western, and travels internationally. Daughter Katy, 19, is sophomore honors student at Glendale Comm. Coll, transferring to Az. State. Univ. West in the spring to work on science education and special education degrees. Youngest son Connor, 15 is sophomore at performing arts and college preparatory academy, and a classical guitarist. Husband Cliff works as science teacher with me, and as a family, we continue to work with homeless issues, sharing extra room in our house with high school students who need it.
